Frequently asked questions

What formats can I convert between?

JSON, YAML, TOML, XML, and CSV — pick any source and any target, in any combination, not just conversions to JSON.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste here is sent to a server or tied to any document open elsewhere in the app.

Why does converting to TOML or XML sometimes show an error?

Both formats require an object at the top level — TOML has no way to represent a bare array or scalar, and neither does XML without a wrapping root element. If your source is an array or a plain value, convert it to JSON or YAML instead, or wrap it in an object first.

Why does converting to CSV sometimes show an error?

CSV needs a flat list of records — an array of objects. A single object or deeply irregular data won't convert to rows and columns.

How are nested objects handled in CSV?

Nested fields are flattened into dotted column names (e.g. details.type), and unflattened the same way when converting CSV back to JSON, YAML, TOML, or XML.

Is this tool free to use?

Yes, vtree is free with no account or sign-up required.
